We’ve all heard the stories.
“I found a Chanel bag for $20 at an op shop.”
“I discovered Hermès in a charity store.”
“I can’t believe someone donated this!”
These stories are exciting. They are part of the fun and fantasy of preloved fashion.
And sometimes, incredible finds really do happen.
But they also raise an interesting question:
Are we sometimes more in love with the story than the piece itself?
What Are We Really Buying?
When I shop preloved, I always look at the design first.
The fabric.
The construction.
The colour.
The silhouette.
The way a garment moves.
A designer name can be exciting, but the label alone doesn’t make something beautiful.
Some of my favourite pieces aren’t the most recognisable brands. They’re garments where someone has thought carefully about the cut, the details and the way they make the wearer feel.
For me, fashion has always been about great design.
Why Designer Labels Matter — But Aren’t Everything
Luxury fashion houses often have incredible histories, craftsmanship and creativity.
There’s nothing wrong with appreciating designer fashion.
But a label shouldn’t be the only reason you buy something.
Instead, ask yourself:
• Would I still love this piece if nobody knew the label?
• Does it suit my lifestyle?
• Does it make me feel confident?
• Will I actually wear it?
These questions often tell you far more than the name sewn into the neckline.
Authenticating Designer Pieces Can Be Difficult
The designer resale market has grown enormously, bringing greater interest in authentic luxury fashion.
Today there are many ways people authenticate designer clothing and accessories:
- labels
- serial numbers
- stitching
- materials
- hardware
- packaging
- expert knowledge
But the reality is that authentication can be complicated.
Some items are straightforward.
Others are much harder to verify.
Even experienced shoppers sometimes can’t be completely certain.
That’s why I always encourage people to research carefully and avoid making assumptions based solely on appearance.
The Joy of Finding Beautiful Design
I once bought a silk scarf that looked very similar to a Hermès design.
The colours were stunning.
The fabric felt beautiful.
The pattern immediately caught my eye.
After researching it, I wasn’t completely sure whether it was authentic.
But I realised something.
I didn’t buy it because I wanted people to think it was Hermès.
I bought it because I genuinely loved it.
Every time I wear it, it brings me joy.
The Real Skill of Shopping Preloved
The best preloved shoppers develop an eye.
They learn to recognise:
Finding an expensive designer label can be exciting.
But the real treasure is learning how to recognise great clothing wherever you find it.
Because the most valuable piece in your wardrobe isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.
It’s the one you can’t wait to wear.
