It all started when I was a child, my grandfather took me to my first preloved store.
I had wanted a silver bangle at the time and there it was at the thrift store at a bargain price. I think this was when I first saw the advantages of buying preloved.
Many performers and artists are now wearing vintage /preloved fashion and it has now become very fashionable. They have found that it is not only stylish but also great for the planet. Vintage/ preloved fashion makes you more of an individual as you can sometimes find one-off pieces. There are several advantages to buying preloved fashion, firstly there is the pricing benefits and secondly there is the environmental aspect. It always makes me feel good thinking that my shopping sprees are creating a better world by reusing and giving clothes a new lease on life. Buying and wearing second hand, can help reduce the demand for new clothes, which reduces negative impacts on our planet and minimizes landfill. Buying from charity shops gives back to charity. I have always said it’s guilt free shopping! Every dollar you spend helps someone who is less fortunate.
Something else that I enjoy about shopping in preloved stores is the fun of the chase, finding that outfit, something unusual or something you might not have tried before because of the price point. I have found some amazing outfits that I may never have tried before and found that I really loved them. With the help of styling an outfit whether it is shirt, pants, or a dress by adding other items can make something really special out of it. Having the skills to find the outfit and then style it for you to look great and feel comfortable, that is part of the service of inclusive styling.
I have taken many of my clients on trips to preloved stores. It is always a treasure trove of fun and excitement going shopping in a preloved store. We enjoy the excitement of finding something interesting, beautiful, or even some vintage designer wear.
Dressibility as an inclusive fashion styling business which needs to factor in accessibility. I have researched and know the stores that are easily accessible. Many charity/ second-hand stores aren’t in big shopping centres. This is important to ensure clients with sensory issues are comfortable and get the most out of our styling session.
I remember going shopping with my client Amy who was looking for an outfit for her performance with the gay and lesbian choir. The theme was Eurovision and shopping preloved was so much fun. There were so many choices available when looking for some glam and glitter outfits. We found the perfect long skirt in one store and then we built on that, sourcing more pieces to wear that brought the glam and glitter of Eurovision to life. Amy looked gorgeous and had a fabulous night at the performance.
Whilst sometimes rummaging through racks of clothes can be overwhelming, when you have a trained eye for detail, pattern, and texture, it’s easy to find something special.
I love vintage/preloved shopping and hope to see you on my tours to find some amazing outfits, bags, shoes and jewellery!
